myTunes

myTunes started back in October of 2003 when Apple first released iTunes for Windows. I noticed iTunes had a sharing feature and was interested in how it specifically worked. I found that iTunes doesn't stream the music when sharing, but it actually sends a bit-perfect copy of whatever song is requested. Since iTunes only allows these files to be played and not saved, I worked on a way to allow users to save these songs being sent to their computers. Ten days later I released a small program call myTunes. News got around very quickly and it was Slashdotted and mentioned on a variety of other websites. The program ended up being downloaded over 100,000 times until it was disabled by iTunes 4.5 in April 2004.

myTunes Redux
I worked on an update to myTunes called myTunes Redux over the summer of 2004. I wanted to simplify searching of files and also not require iTunes to be open to search for music. Since the protocol iTunes uses to share music isn't officially documented the development took longer than it otherwise might have. I released myTunes Redux on September 4, 2004. As of October 2006, it had been downloaded over 3 million times.
